What is an RSU?
A Rural Service Unit is a small scale service centre established with initial external financial support and equipped with a very basic set of tools which are tailored to local needs.

What is its purpose?
A Rural Service Unit is used as:

  1. A repair shop for engine-driven machines, farm equipment, buildings, construction and common facilities, etc.

  2. A manufacturing shop making simple items and equipment for sale/local use. For instance, copra driers, tubular steel furniture, bus shelter supports, school and health centre fittings and furniture, etc.

  3. A local craft centre

  4. A training facility and a "magnet" for unemployed youths

  5. … A meeting point for the community!

Who pays for it?
The local community, by monthly instalments ($30 to $100 equivalent) over a period of 2 to 4 years, at the end of which the equipment becomes the property of the community.

How is it run?
As a small business enterprise, working for a fee, keeping records as a way of assessing and improving its own performance. If you want to know more, don't hesitate to contact us!
